September 2018

October 4, 2018 by admin

September has flown by quickly for our religious school students! Between the High Holidays and preparing for Sukkot, they were kept busy.

Each class had the opportunity to go visit the art room this month, where Sharon Serbin led them in creating special “Super-Hero” art to hang during Sukkah Decorating Day. From the Kindergarten and First Grade’s super hero plate faces, to the 7th grade’s “Super Hero” Ushpizin, the creative art pieces added color and flair to our Sukkah.

The third through seventh grade students were able to spend some time in our new Youth Lounge before religious school on Tuesdays. Between playing knee hockey, board games, and Foosball, the students were able to have some fun and spend time with their religious school friends before heading to class. Our new Youth Leaders, David Kronman, Casey Lazear, and Alexa Correnti, are enthusiastically developing programs for our new space. Keep an eye out for invitations to new Lounge Nights and Lounge Lunches in the months to come.

Featured Class:

KINDERGARTEN/FIRST GRADE, taught by Rachel Eaton.

In the K/1 class the students spent time getting to know each other and the routines of their classroom. Through read-alouds and discussion, they considered the what, why, and how of the fall holidays.  They learned all about special foods and rituals associated with the holidays, and joined the older grades for a special Shofar Blast experience. They each were even able to build their own Lego Sukkah! With the holidays behind us, they will shift gears towards Bible Stories and more Hebrew in the months to come. They will hear the stories of Jonah and King David, and talk about what it is to be kind and caring towards others. The Hebrew letters will not be taught sequentially, but instead will be introduced in an order that supports reading key words that are a part of other lessons.

Family Havdalah & Movie Night – October 6th

On Saturday, October 6th, families are invited to attend a very special Havdalah and Movie night.
The Havdalah Service begins at 7, followed by a family friendly movie, Boss Baby, and snacks!
Please send your RSVP to Patti Boring at Pboring@adatshalompgh.org

Special TA & Confirmation Program – October 14th

We will be hosting two special guests, Raz Levin and Hadar Maravent, two Shinshinim who are visiting Pittsburgh for the year. What is a ‘Shinshin’? A “Shinshin” is an 18-year-old Israeli emissary sent by the Israeli government and the Jewish Agency for Israel to communities abroad with the goal of educating people of all ages about Israel and Israeli culture.

Adat Shalom Religious School will be collaborating with these emissaries as we assist the Teaching Assistants in developing and implementing unique Israel programs for our students. On October 14, from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm, Raz and Hadar will kick off the year with a fun filled afternoon that includes lunch, discussions and games that will teach and inspire the TAs and Confirmation Students to become leaders in the school community.

7th Grade Class Service and Dinner – October 19th

Come support the 7th Grade as they help lead a Friday Night Service!
These special services are especially fun to attend as Rabbi helps our students feel comfortable on the bimah.
7th Grade students and their families are invited to share in a dinner beginning at 6 pm.
Services follow at 7:15 pm.

Info Session With Ben Phipps – October 30th

Does your teen need community service hours? Or perhaps you are looking for a way to make a meaningful difference in the area?

Join us at 4:30 pm on October 30th as we welcome Pastor Ben Phipps, from Roots of Faith in Sharpsburg, into the school to share some information about how our congregants can contribute to The Neighborhood Table, a free community dinner hosted three times each month to help provide food to those who may otherwise go hungry.

We are hoping that our teens and families can see this partnership as an opportunity to make a difference in the community (and yes, complete those mandatory community service hours!).

Welcome to the School Year

August 31, 2018 by admin

“Teachers open our eyes to the world. They give us curiosity and confidence. They teach us to ask questions. They connect us to our past and future. They’re the guardians of our social heritage. We have lots of heroes today – sportsmen, supermodels, media personalities. They come, they have their fifteen minutes of fame, and they go. But the influence of good teachers stays with us. They are the people who really shape our life.”

From Optimism to Hope p. 132

As we head into our new school year, I’d like to challenge each of you to take a moment to remember a teacher who shaped you. Teachers have such a strong influence in how their students approach learning. The best teachers can nudge children towards the life-long tendency to be curious, to question, and to explore. A religious school teacher has a special role in relation to their students. They aren’t just stirring in them the beginnings of life-long learning, they are giving them the foundation for a life-long connection to their faith and their heritage. The relationship a Jewish person has with their faith and their ancestors can touch every piece of their life, even outside of religion and the synagogue.

I’d like to start off our year acknowledging the commitment that our religious school parents show when they make Jewish learning a priority for their children. It can be difficult to add one more thing to an already busy schedule, or to pull a tired pre-teen out of bed early on a Sunday morning. I personally thank you. I’d also like to acknowledge the dedication I see in the religious school teachers. Adat Shalom is lucky to have a group of teachers that are truly here with the mission of guiding and shaping the next generation. They each take pride in their lessons, their classroom and their relationships with their students. Together, the teachers and their students form memories and a bond that will stay with each of them for life.

When I was a student, I remember making Challah with my religious school teacher and classmates. The softening of the consonants in the Hebrew songs she sang to us as we baked gave me such a sense of belonging. I feel the same now when I bake Challah with my own children, singing some of the same songs my teacher sang to me.

As a teacher, I will never forget the thoughtful answer an 8 year old student gave when I asked the question the class where they saw G-d. “I see G-d when people who don’t speak the same language or believe the same things can work together and get something good done”, she said. I realized then, in my first year of teaching, that I wasn’t done learning. Now it was time for my students to teach me.

I look forward to this school year, filled with new opportunities to instill curiosity and confidence, to build connections between the past, present and future. I end this note with another challenge. Whether you are a parent, or a teacher, or both, I challenge you to consider what the child in front of you may remember about this day. What small thing can you do to make an impression?
