The Dr. Saul and Emma Fleegler Library

The Dr. Saul and Emma Fleegler Library is named in honor of Dr. Saul and Emma Fleegler who made a very generous contribution to ensure the perpetuity of our library at Adat Shalom and of our spiritual home. Dr. and Mrs. Fleegler valued books and learning and strived to set an example of giving for others by enhancing our synagogue with this beautiful library.

The Adat Shalom Library contains almost 7000 items, including fiction, short stories, biographies, videos, DVDs, books on cassette and CD, as well as selections for pre-schoolers, elementary school children, and young adults. Our books deal with a wide range of subjects including: the Bible, the Talmud, philosophy, holidays, cooking, art, music, literature, history, and general interest Judaica. We also have a variety of newspapers and journals. Color-coded tape identifies children’s books about specific holidays, Israel, and the Holocaust. A guide to the color code is displayed in the library.

The OPAC computer terminal in the library is easy to use for searches. Volunteers are in the library on Sundays from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 noon when school is in session. They will be glad to help you find materials and use the search terminal. The library is open whenever the building is open. Instructions are posted so that you can help yourself when no volunteer is present.

The Shabbat Library Cart, in the Social Hall on Friday nights and Saturday mornings, is stocked with a variety of materials for people of all ages. A simple system of family cards, envelopes, and pre-stamped date-due slips makes it easy to borrow anything on Shabbat without writing.

If you wish to sponsor a book in honor of or in memory of someone, please contact us.
If you have a suggestion for a specific item or topic you would like us to add, please let us know.

Books from the B’nai Israel and Beth Jacob Congregations, along with donations from the library of Rabbi Y. Irving Dick, our first rabbi, made up the collection of the new Adat Shalom library when it was dedicated in December, 1997.

The library has continued to grow through the support of individual donors, the Congregational Board, Sisterhood, Men’s Club, and all-volunteer staff. The library does not have an endowment, however, and is dependent on donations.

The Library has been honored by accreditation from the Association of Jewish Libraries.
